writing to see where it goes

   I'm just going to start typing and see where it goes.  I have four essays sitting on my electronic desktop, half finished, just started, mostly done, mostly boring.  But it has been far from boring here, and I can't quite figure out why I've hit this wall writing.

   My son Eirk and his wife, Solana, visited last week and it has been satisfying to share a little of my life in Benque with them.  They met my friend Nick Ruiz, Mayor of Benque Viejo, the staff at the Town Hall, my host family the Hernandez, and my first host family in San Antonio, the Tzibs.

    We also visited Xunantunich, a Maya site and ATM Cave before heading out to Caye Caulker just to relax. Did some snorkeling there, swimming with nurse sharks and some very large groupers.  All in all pretty laid back. 
   And the pictures once again make a difficult case for the hardships involved in Peace Corps Belize.  Won't even try to go there.  These past two years have exceeded my expectations for what the Peace Corps experience could be.  I leave Belize in less than a month and I'm both pleased with what Mayor Nick, the staff and I have accomplished and aware of what is left to do. 

    But that, too, is to be expected.  I'll be leaving Benque in good hands, with friend and fellow Benqueno Kota Murakami the JICA Volunteer (Japanese Peace Corps), and Subrata Basu, the new US Peace Corps Volunteer taking up where I leave off.

    Both Kota and Subrata are architects, and Subrata spent many years as a city planner with Miami/Dade County.  He emigrated to the U.S. from India when he was 24, so we lend a certain international flavor to the office.  I think Benque has reached a "tipping point" where people and resources are coming together to bring about changes that will be more than a sum of the constituent parts, and I'm excited to see where it leads.  Just this week we dedicated the renovated Chiclero Park, and received word that we have funding for Coronation Park, just across from the Town Hall.  

   Some roadwork is completed, financed by the Ministry of Works, and the excruciatingly slow pace of the World Bank funding for significant road work should bear fruit in December.  Or January...maybe February.  But it is coming.  That is one of the things I will write about when I return, and it ain't all a pretty picture.

    More than that though, Belize in general and Benque in particular, has become a second home.  I have friends here I hope to stay connected with the rest of my life.  I have standing offers to stay in any of several homes, and I know there will be people upset if I come in country and fail to visit.  My world view has changed and I cross borders now with a deeper realization of the nonsense it all entails.  Not that I am not sufficiently impressed by the young men in uniform gripping automatic weapons.  But I am more impressed by the immutable fact that the artificial line on a map is put there solely for the gain of a powerful few at the expense of the many.

    My town of Benque Viejo Del Carmen is more like my home town of Pierce, Nebraska, than it is different.  Everybody knows everybody, and they know everybody's business.  Most people are related but few would admit to some of the relations.  Most people are concerned about the young people growing up restless in a world increasingly out of control, about how to make a living.  About next month's rent or groceries.  About the friend with cancer, or a tumor, or recovering from being run over by a tractor.

    I've known these people all my life.  And even though I still struggle with the language, I do not struggle to know the heart of this town.  One day we will see that we really are just one family.  And I grew up knowing that nothing, is as important as family.
