When I return to the States in October, I promised to leave my Yamaha guitar to my first host family, the Tzibs. I have grown fond of it...has become a trusted friend. But guitars are hard to come by down here and I do have my Martin at home. So I will be guitarless for a couple of weeks and will probably haunt the sketchier guitar stores and pawn shops in Florida to get a fix now and then before heading up to Nebraska to visit family and friends, and retrieve my Martin from my good friend Dory.
This divesting myself of things for the second time in a little more than two years got me to thinking of ownership of late, and how I came here knowing I would leave the guitar, but how it has in the ensuing months become "mine." I don't know if it's avarice specifically, or just simple selfishness...
I like its voice, though it's slightly more difficult to play than the Martin, as the action is higher...I actually need to find a guitar with a bit more space between the strings...my finger placement isn't all that accurate and I get plenty of buzzes that shouldn't oughta be there. Not the fault of the guitar,
of course, just poor technique.
But I know it will be going to a good home....
I don't think I have a problem with ownership in general...but I do like the concept of stewardship better. And if I know the "thing" will be well taken care of, well then, the passing on part is much easier. And the "thing" owned has less power over me. I know many people who are much owned by what they have accumulated. Very few have the character and vision of Warren Buffet. Rare indeed. I doubt that I would be so generous or so wise.
So many are the lessons you offer us.
