I do believe Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
It seems there is little pressure to do much else but cook up some good food and share it with family and friends. There are usually some pretty good football games to watch, which are almost as good excuse to sit and do nothing as smoking a cheap cigar watching the sun set.
There is some attempt to think about giving thanks, and that is a good thing. I think Thanksgiving benefits from the hyper-commercialism of Christmas. It kind of gets lost in the advertising shuffle, as retailers gear up for selling, selling, selling all and everything, and consumers froth about consuming in some strange confused celebration of the birth of a mideastern Jewish baby in a stable.
There is a nod to orange crepe paper and cutout turkeys, but mostly Thanksgiving just ducks behind the hype and gives everyone a chance to get together with family, eat, sip coffee or wine or beer and talk. And I'm thankful for that, among other things.
Thankful to be part of the German family, and adopted into the Hodson family. Thankful I won the birth lottery and was one of the lucky few born in the United States. Thankful we can have elections here where no one dies, no buildings are bombed, no cars burned in the streets. Thankful that the election is now over and the ridiculous ads instantly died out on TV, and newspapers, and direct mail. (disturbed, true, by the billions spent, and what could have come of those billions, but that is another blog...thankful here that even that show of excess is possible).
Thankful for the crazy secessionists who sent petitions to the White House to secede from the Union, proving to one and all that they really, really don't get it, that they don't understand how lucky they are and how thankful they should be that they can even play at that game, puffed up with their own pride, massaging their bruised egos. There is much we can do better here in these Uniteds States, and we can disagree about that, but running away from a problem never solved it. These UNITED states are worth the effort it takes to all pull together. And I'm thankful for that
and for this day and the gift of life.
Lots to be thankful about. One thing I am very thankful for are a group of memories comprising months of time over a period of some years. Vividly floating to the top of my memory are all the great songs you wrote, and sang, all the cutesy leads and trills I hit with our fave the Clock song. The Christmas song, Cash, Springsteen, Lightfoot, and the infamous B#minor, or bmajor. We made some nice tones old friend, and I miss that. What I would give to sit down in that group again and start that clock song and then all the others in the wee hours and several margaritas. I remember your Andy Griffith hospitality, and all the laughs. Thanks.

Randy...I miss it too...and remember fondly the leads you interjected into the musical nights. Would love to have a recording of some of that interplay, but perhaps best left to the soft edges of memory. Music has long been a place for me to go to remember or forget, or to give voice to what is sometimes difficult to say. Your company and the music we shared got me through some dark nights of the soul my friend. Thanks to you too...Rg
